Laurel, Christon & Johnstown Railroad
The premise of the LC&J was as a coal hauling bridge line from Christon to Johnstown, with Laurel in between. Track was primarily hand-laid code 70 rail on wood ties with choke cable controlled turnouts and electrical block control. Russ built the layout with modularity, not necessarily portability, in mind. Many of the structures and rolling stock on the layout were scratch built from Russ' imagination or based on prototypes. Scenery was old-school hardshell over screen covered with layers of ground cover. Russ began building the layout while still living in an apartment, that later become the wye in Johnstown. The LC&J was featured in the September, 1971 Model Railroader magazine. Russ also dabbled in a bit of large scale outdoor railroading (see pictures below).
